BERLIN: preliminary data showed German retail sales slipped 0.3% monthly in July, but still 0.8% higher on an annual basis.

Monthly decline was reported by the Federal Statistical Office on Wednesday, compared with economists’ expectations which increased 0.5%.

Federal Statistical Office does not explain what causes the annual increase, but UniCredit economist Alexander Koch, referring to the decline in sales of television after World Cup fever as the cause of the monthly sales slide.

Sales in the period from January to July rose 0.9% compared with a year earlier.

German retail sales data are often revised. With reference to changes in methods, statistics office recently reported first half sales rose 0.9% year-on-year, compared with a decrease of 0.4% in previous reports.
